ANGKASA
The 29 International School for Young Astronomers (ISYA)

Introduction

International School for Young Astronomers (ISYA) is an initiative of International Astronomical Union (IAU) to further strengthen and promote the development of professional astronomers in the international arena.

ISYA is open to science graduates especially for students that have a basic degree in astronomy or space science. Normally they are 30 participants for each session. The participants should follow the lecture, practical and computer session in the 21 days period(3 weeks). The lecturer of the ISYA comes from all the experts around the world.

The 29th International School for Young Astronomers (ISYA) will be held in Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi Island) from 6 – 27 March 2007. ISYA 2007 is organized by the National Space Agency of Malaysia (ANGKASA), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

Venue

i)  University Malaya, Kuala Lumpur – 6 to 9 March 2007
ii) MARA Junior Science College, Langkawi Island – 12 – 27 March 2007

Objective

The objective ISYA 2007 is as follows:
i)  To encourage the young scientist especially from Asia Pacific region to get involved deeply in astronomy     research and explore the future development of space science while building a strong network within the               countries in this region;
ii) To train and expose the participants the the latest knowledge in astronomical research arena; and
iii)To present a unique opportunity for participants to have informal discussions among their peers and with       recognized experts in the selected fields of research over a period of three weeks.

Course structure

i)   The language of the ISYA is English
ii)  Practical exercises were organized with data handling and reductions, using some of the usual packages     (IRAF)
iii) Among the ISYA activities are observations using the 0.5 meter Carbon Truss, Ritchey-Chrιtien Cassegrainian      Reflector robotic telescope at the Langkawi National Observatory
iv) ISYA 2007 comprises three (3) segments as listed below:
     - Astronomical instrumentation
     - Solar physics
     - Radio astronomy
Also included is a session on using IRAF and Virtual observatory

v)  Among the topics to be covered are: stellar astrophysics, physics of galaxies, specstroscopy and images,       physics of the sun, radio astronomy, astronomical data bases and virtual observatory.
vi) The student will also have an opportunity to present short talks about their own research. In addition a certain       number of public lectures are planned in Kuala Lumpur and Langkawi Island.
