Theme Space Optical and UV Astronomy Overview This workshop will : - Introduce scientists to space-based UV / optical astronomy and the capabilities of recent, current and future space missions (including HST, FUSE, EUVE, IUE, GALEX and the World Space Observatory);
- Develop knowledge of the key data archives (including the NASA MAST archive, the ESO ST-ECF and the IUE INES database) and provide training in the techniques required to access and analyse data from them;
- Develop skills in proposal writing techniques for active space missions running international Guest Observer programmes, such as HST, so enabling opportunities for involvement in future missions; and
- Lay foundations for possible post-workshop research collaborations.
The workshop will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 1st - 14th June 2008. The programme will include lectures on a range of topics in UV and optical astronomy, on-line data products and data processing pipelines, data reduction and analysis and analysis software, data archives, search for targets and display quick-look data for inspection purposes. They will also produce a draft guest observer proposal. Further details can be found under Programme. Venue The workshop (lecture) will be held in the Judicial and Legal Training Institute (ILKAP), Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia, which will provide accomodation for participants (including the lecturers) as well as lecture rooms and computer laboratory required for the practical work. Particpants are advised to arrive at KLIA on 1st June 2008 and depart on 15th June 2008. For your information, ANGKASA will only bare the cost for accomodation from 1st to 14th June 2008 only. COSPAR Capacity-Building Workshop In 2001, COSPAR initiated a series of Capacity-Building workshops, designed to create lasting bridges between researchers in developing and developed countries in a variety of space related domains. For information about the workshop objectives, scientific programs, funding, practical requirements and how to submit proposals, please see the COSPAR Capacity Building Workshop guidelines. Workshop Structure Workshop Structure Regional – held in University or space center with good facilities in a developing country. Draw students from surrounding countries with less good facilities. All students’ costs are covered. ~25 students participant and ~8 lecturers (plus 1-2 support staff). Workshops contain lectures on mission, software, science and some more basic topics, but the key element is the project. Features: - Each participant has a dedicated PC for the duration of the workshop
- Each participant has an advisor for the duration of the workshop
- Half the time is devoted to the project
- Project should be related to participants’ research interest and those of home institute
- Encourage team working
- Closing session of workshop is a poster session
Language of Instruction English Target Participants Target participants are postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers from less-developed countries in Asia-Pacific region. In order to make sure that all potential participants have the chance to attend the COSPAR Capactiy Building Workshop, the expenses for accomodation and board will be covered, and travel support can also be made available at a level depending on need and status of applicants. Financial constraints then require that applicants cannot simply register to attend, but will undergo a selection procedure. Details will be found under Registration.
